The foundations
of what is now the Gleeson Group were laid by Michael Joseph Gleeson in Sheffield
in 1903. Gradually the business grew from a housebuilding operation in a small
geographical area to a publicly quoted national company embracing virtually
every area of expertise within the construction and property industries.
Michael Joseph Gleeson ran the business for nearly half a century before retiring
in 1950. His successor as Chairman was his nephew, Jack Gleeson, under whom
the company obtained a listing on the Stock Exchange in 1960.
Jack Gleeson retired as Managing Director in 1988, and continued as Chairman;
his nephew, Dermot Gleeson, became Group Chief Executive.
Dermot Gleeson succeeded his uncle as Chairman on Jack Gleeson's death in
1994. Four years later he assumed the role of Executive Chairman and a new
Group Managing Director was appointed in David Eyre, the former Managing Director
of the Group's Engineering Division.
