BOC's global gas equipment market has gone from strength to strength:
"There's a new player in town and we're determined to take a hefty slice of the action." Those were the words spoken by the then director for BOC Industrial's welding and cutting business, Dynes Woodrow, in 2001.
Woodrow was referring to BOC's determination to take on the global gas equipment market and turn it on its head. Now, three years later, the Project Firefly team has done just that and BOC is the world's biggest virtual manufacturer and distributor of own-brand gas equipment.
From small beginnings with the GBP1.5 million upgrade of Afrox's manufacturing facility in Germiston, known as Project Transform, in 1999, BOC Industrial can boast a 20 per cent share of its global markets in 2004.
In a few short years, BOC-branded products have stormed the gas equipment markets in Australia, the south Pacific, Asia, the US, Africa and more recently Latin America and Canada.
The Firefly team is now eyeing the European market with a similar thirst for success. In every geography BOC's own-brand gas equipment sales have risen and margins improved.
