It has eight biotechnology products on the market and a strong pipeline based
on both proteins and small molecules.
Serono has products available in four core therapeutic areas:
reproductive health where we are the world leader in infertility treatment,
neurology where Rebif® is a leading treatment for relapsing-remitting
multiple sclerosis,
growth and metabolism treatments for AIDS wasting and growth deficiencies,
and
dermatology, where Serono is poised to enter this new therapeutic are with
the approval of Raptiva® (efalizumab), for moderate-to-severe psoriasis,
in Swithzerland (March 2004) and Argentina (May 2004).
Serono has an integrated R&D capability in-house as well as a network
of biotech alliances with smaller biotech companies and academic groups. The
Company employs over 1300 R&D personnel, and over 23% of total revenues
in 2003 were invested in discovering and developing new therapeutics.
The pipeline includes both recombinant proteins and small molecules, focusing
on the existing therapeutic areas as well as new targets such as dermatology,
gastroenterology and autoimmune diseases. The Company operates in 44 countries,
with production facilities in eight countries and sales in over 90 countries.
